Spring Racing Trends for 2022 with Celeb-Stylist, Donny Galella

As Spring arrives, it brings one of the most exciting times of the Australian fashion calendar, Spring Racing!

With the races largely being closed/limited for the public over the last couple of years, you’d be forgiven for not being totally across what’s “in” when it comes to trackside trends. Don’t worry, we’ve got your back.

We sat down with celeb-stylist, Donny Galella to get his full rundown of all the trends he thinks will hit at the races in 2022.

Donny doesn’t just style celebs, he prides himself on “proudly styling all genders, ages, shapes, sizes & budgets”.

More recently, he’s known for his awesome initiative “100 makeovers in 100 days”, which ran during the peak of the pandemic. Donny selected 100 Aussies who were either doing it tough, or who were heroes of their local community, to give them a makeover, along with a wardrobe of new clothing donated by some great Australian brands.

You can check out Donny on his website and on Instagram.

Without further ado, here’s Donny’s style trends for Spring Racing 2022!

Ladies’ Suiting

The 2-piece pantsuit is a classic look for the races and Donny tells us that this year will be no exception. It’s all about the relaxed “boyfriend” style suit.

“This season, it’s a little oversized & relaxed, with even pant legs being more relaxed or wide.”

Sleeves & Shoulders

“Puffy sleeves and big shoulders are still trending this season”, advises Donny. These have been a hit in recent years and early releases from some of Australia’s best designers tell us they’ll be a hit once again.

An elaborate or statement sleeve or shoulder is sure to get attention at the track this Spring, with Donny telling us to “pump up the volume for maximum exposure”.

Dopamine Dressing

Donny expects “lots of bright, bold, fun colour – especially the neon tones”. He labelled this “Dopamine Dressing”, which is a trend/phenomenon promoting the idea that wearing clothes of a particular colour will boost your mood.

“Colours like aqua, orange, green, and lots of pink” are Donny’s picks.

It’s not just about colour – studies on Dopamine Dressing show that when people wear clothes with some symbolic value to them, their perceived confidence increases.

“If you don’t feel comfortable rocking a bold colour outfit, consider bold bright coloured hats, clutches and heels.”, suggests Donny.

Barbiecore

“Pink will definitely be a huge colour trackside this Spring” according to Donny. He credits this to a current global trend, which is thanks to the upcoming Barbie movie, as well as Valentino doing a whole collection in pink.

Metallics

High-shine fabrics, sparkly fabrics and sequins are all on Donny’s radar for trackside trends this year, saying this will “definitely turn heads”.

Donny was excited about what some Aussie labels were releasing in this area, making special note that “Acler have released a stunning pleated metallic gold dress!”.

Wrapping Up

With such great advice, we’re sure you’ll be all set to hit the track this Spring, both looking and feeling your best.
